Katherine Finerty is an Independent Curator, Writer, and Educator focusing on research-based and socially-engaged practices, translocal identity politics, and global contemporary art.

Katherine works collaboratively to develop alternative cultural discourses and multi-disciplinary art experiences that encourage progressive exchanges and participation. She is currently Project Curator in International Partnerships at Tate. Independently she works as a Guest Curator and Lecturer for organisations in London, Ghana & beyond in addition to ongoing exhibition research and art education development. Other recent work experiences include being Strategic Partnerships Consultant for Pace Gallery (2022-2023) and Curator & Communications Manager at the The Showroom, London (2019-2022).

Bio

Katherine Finerty (b. New York City, lives and works in London)

Finerty has a Masters in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art, London; a BA in History of Art and Africana Studies from Cornell University, New York; and has studied History of Art at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. Alongside her independent curatorial practice, she is also an arts writer and has recently published catalogue essays, artist interviews, and critical articles addressing the practices of artists and collectives for a variety of art platforms including museums, contemporary art galleries, biennials, journals and digital magazines.

She recently worked at Pace Gallery London in Strategic Partnerships, supporting the development of new business opportunities, sales, special projects, content, live programming, and online initiatives. Her academic work focuses on expanding comparative curatorial approaches to represent local narratives and global modernities within art institutions and public spaces. Finerty also teaches art seminars at secondary schools including The City of London School and The African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg on contemporary international art with a focus on decolonial art history, diverse exhibiting contexts, and collaborative interdisciplinary practices. Museum experience includes The Studio Museum in Harlem; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Guggenheim Museum, New York; as well as galleries such as White Cube, London and Gallery 1957, Accra. 

Major projects include co-curating the new digital music commission and interdisciplinary conversation platform IN·FLO·RES·CENCE with Reece Ewing and a live programme of events inspired by The Showroom’s commitment to togetherness Collective Intimacy as well as it’s recent virtual reactivation for theVOV; curating a 3-day inaugural interactive Forum for Open Space Contemporary; and working as the Curatorial Assistant to Elvira Dyangani Ose for GIBCA 2015 (Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art) and Biennale de Lubumbashi 2012/2013.

Working on the IP programme, leading on the development and delivery of an ambitious new artistic commission at a Tate site and major international museum; and supporting Tate’s international touring exhibition programme.
